Building institutions. Backing people.

The son of a mining engineer from rural Zvishavane, Richard Ngwenya builds on a family legacy of patience and rigour. Over 22 years he has structured the capital behind institutions that endure - done quietly, and with people who play the long game.

The Story

It starts with a mining town in Zimbabwe.

Richard's relationship with capital begins with his father. Ben Ngwenya grew up in rural Zvishavane, Zimbabwe, and earned a scholarship to the Camborne School of Mines in England - an applied physics degree, later a Master's in Mining Engineering. He returned home to run Zimbabwe Alloys and the Bindura smelter and refinery complex, and held senior roles at Anglo American. That inheritance - patience, rigour, and the conviction that institutions outlast individuals - is the foundation Richard builds on.

After studying Finance and Accounting at the University of Cape Town, Richard apprenticed across every side of capital - audit at Deloitte, private banking at Investec, wealth advisory at Absa, corporate finance at Barclays Africa, cross-border structuring at Maitland - before founding Nisela Capital in 2011.

Across these mandates he has structured more than R50 billion in transactions and overseen R4 billion in assets. He holds the numbers lightly: the work that matters is the kind that compounds - businesses built, capital stewarded, institutions made to endure.

The Bankability Gap
The fund asks: will this return capital inside my window? The family office asks: is this the right thing to own for the next decade?
The Family Office Thesis
A headline BEE deal moves equity. A transformational structure moves economics - and then compounds them.

The Journey

Every seat taught a different side of capital.

The Portfolio

One conviction, carried across every mandate: put capital where it compounds - patiently.

None of them are solo pursuits. Each was built with partners who share the belief that the mid-market is where genuine transformation and genuine returns compound together.

Advisory & Alternative Assets

The institutional anchor of Richard's work - a specialist financial-services house with deep advisory and corporate-finance DNA. Its asset-management arm, Nisela Fund Managers, is a black-owned, Category II licensed alternative asset manager focused on Sub-Saharan Africa. The advisory franchise gives the firm proprietary access to a curated pipeline of recapitalisations, growth-capital opportunities and structured transactions - institutional discipline plus differentiated origination.

What the firm runs

Segregated discretionary mandates tailored to institutional and high-net-worth investors - no co-mingled fund risk. Rules-based smart-beta and index strategies across South African and selected Sub-Saharan markets. And alternative investments - private credit, real assets and structured exposures sourced through the Nisela franchise rather than auctions.

Flagship - Northam / Zambezi

The landmark unwind of the Zambezi Platinum BEE structure: a c. R43bn transaction that realised R13.6bn in net value for the BEE consortium - one of the largest BEE wealth-realisation events in South African mining history, recognised as the 2022 Dealmakers Corporate Finance Deal of the Year.

Fintech & AI Ecosystems

Where Nisela deploys institutional capital through structured mandates, HoneyBadger deploys patient, permanent capital directly - the flexibility of a family office with the discipline of an institution. The thesis: Africa's financial infrastructure is being rebuilt in real time, and the builders need capital that understands the long arc.

AI ecosystems

Beyond fintech, HoneyBadger is building a position in the applied-intelligence layer that will reshape how African financial services are delivered, underwritten and distributed - conviction-led, multi-year positions that fund structures struggle to hold.

Why a family office

The most decisive form of capital on the continent: no investment-committee theatre, no quarterly redemption pressure, no fund-life clock. That decisiveness is exactly what scaling-stage businesses need - and why the family office is emerging as Africa's most effective growth-capital engine.
